The complexity of the environment combined with the speed of transformation has forced modern organizations to turn to specialized services, typically titled consulting. Consulting is born in the United States when a group of people endowed with strong technical and scientific background combined with experience draw practical solutions and advise organizations on what to do in certain critical or complex situations for their business. This practice quickly became a profitable business model, in many instances distorted by having the consultant take execution functions under outsourcing contracts where the customer looks no further than an extension of his working capacity. However, it is important to note that for consultancy to occur in fact it is necessary to align the trilogy: person, organization and customer. In this way, the habits, the career plan, the stimuli, the professional development are a perfect habitat for the transformation to occur and to be effective.

A business organisation is more of a social media expression that Mankind has created under his “own image”. Over the centuries several models were experimented, where the most common one was to keep it within the “household”. Whether it was an empire, a region, a province, a county, a country or any other structure which would demand a a government, the main goal was to ensure a successor who would be distinguished not by a set of skills or competences, but instead, by his surname. Even if that would mean getting married to a relative just to perpetuate the possession of power.
As History and Science have proved, these decision models turn to be the beginning of the end of organisations. The same way genetics forbid us on intersecting genes with close relatives , the same happens when promotions and successions only take place within family or a group of friends in organisations, where the merit and competence is placed on a second plan.
Its essential that a promotion and succession takes place based on merit, competencies and by bringing people together, so we can question continuously and break the “status-quo” in organisations, avoiding egocentric perspectives and promoting a more holistic view by challenging rational decisions and by the enrichment generated by a diversity of opinion and visions

The world of today is full of unprecedented opportunities. If you’ve got ambition, drive, and are smart, you can rise to the top of your profession regardless of where you started out. In his book ‘Managing Oneself’, Peter F. Drucker expounds how you can achieve true and lasting excellence by operating from a combination of your strengths and self-knowledge. To cultivate a deep understanding of yourself you need to ask yourself six fundamental questions.
“We live in an age of unprecedented opportunity: with ambition, drive, and talent, we can rise to the top of our chosen profession regardless of where we started out. But with opportunity comes responsibility. (…) That means it’s up to us to carve out our place in the world and know when to change. And it’s up to us to keep ourselves engaged and productive during a career that may span some 50 years”
Peter Drucker, Managing Oneself, HBR, 1999
It is through this journey that we realize what drives us, what we are good at, where we belong, what make us happy, and the last but not the least, how important are others to our success. Here are some clues to obtain our own answers.
Read more about the six fundamental questions you need to ask yourself.
A management consultant is like a doctor, will diagnose the problem (illness), offer solutions (remedy), discuss the possible consequences of each alternative (the side effects), help to implement the decision (treatment), and observe closely to see that the suggestions are followed correctly to avoid unintended consequences (follow-up visits). And just as a doctor may work only with the patient or involve the family in the treatment, a consultant may work with just the CEO, the management group, or the total organization. Both the consultant and the doctor will reassess and change the course of action or treatment if necessary.
